I develop software and firmware, for embedded things and #linux, as well as a bit of #electronics too. I can do #c but much prefer #python and #micropython. I enjoy having a good rant about #privacy and #encryption, and my utopia is a world where we all develop and use #opensource software.
🐧 #Linux not #Windows:
#Munich is shifting back from #Microsoft to open source – again
Munich's flip-flop back to open source is the latest sign of Germany's political sea change over proprietary software.
It makes me mad and sad that my employer pays #microsoft for all these "apps" in their web-based walled garden. This is some next-level vendor lock-in!
It'd be amazing if my employer instead spent even a fraction of this supporting the #foss software I actually use for my day-to-day work. But what can I do?
Introducing Inkscape 1.0! After a little over three years in development, we're excited to launch this long-awaited version for Windows and Linux (and the macOS preview) Watch the release video (inkscape.org/release-video-1-0) and download it here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0/
Note: If the download link doesn't work, check back a little later. The files are being propagated across our CDN.
We commend ICANN on hearing the concerns of nearly a thousand organizations and over 50,000 people who demanded it reject the sale.

The International Organization for Standardization ( #ISO ) publishes standards which "are the distilled wisdom of people with expertise in their subject matter and who know the needs of the organizations they represent"...
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but is requiring people to copy an XML file out of a PDF, split over multiple page breaks, _really_ the work of someone who understands my needs??
So today we announce that thanks to a partnership with @Fairphone we have been able to port /e/OS to the Fairphone 3, and that we can now sell /e/-Fairphone 3 in the EU!

Hey kiwis, do you like the convenience of Uber Eats, but not the corporate reptiles who run it? Don't like the way they screw over both food businesses (35% commission!) and delivery drivers, and datafarm your food preferences with their app? Here's a homegrown replacement, they only charge a 5% commission, and you don't even need to install an app to use it:
I thought I must be blind or something, but I just realised that Adblock Plus gets a little aggressive against #pixelfed sites and blocks the "boost" button.
Now I've disabled ABP for pixelfed.social I can boost again!
The spam bots and bad actors are out in record force in recent days.
#MastoAdmin folks: If you don't have moderating eyes on your instance 24 hours a day, I implore you: please move to approval-based registrations for the good of the fediverse.
@pixelfed I eventually figured it out! Turns out I needed to copy the full URL to the pixelfed.de user's profile, including the "https://" section. It doesn't work when using the Mastodon-style mentions as the search term. So to add me from a different #pixelfed instance the search term should be https://pixelfed.social/seanlano and not @seanlano
@pixelfed I just wanted to check I'm not doing something wrong 🤔 , should I be able to follow users on other instances from my pixelfed.social account? For example, if I search for @ eljay @pixelfed.de (without spaces, didn't want to actually mention here), I get "No results found!"
Zoom vs. Jitsi:
– Neither Zoom nor Jitsi are always end-to-end encrypted.
Always talk about pros and cons. Don't skip the drawbacks of so-called "alternatives."
The build quality is surprisingly good, not quite as good as Logitech – but still good.
There are a couple of downsides though: there's no "hyper" speed scrolling wheel, a feature I quite liked on the high-end Logitech mice; and there's no extra thumbrest button, which is handy for extra shortcuts.
It also only has a Micro-USB connector for charging, so in that regard it's more like the Logitech MX Master 2 than the newer Master 3.
I asked my work if I could get a larger mouse for working from home during #confinement, since I have fairly large hands. I was keen on one of the #logitech MX Master ones, but they were too expensive. Instead I found some weird other brand #rapoo, and got their MT750s for less than half the price.
I was sceptical at first, but it seems to work flawlessly with #linux! With both Bluetooth and USB. It even has a hardware DPI button, which actually works better than Logitech, in my experience.
